An Epic Tale . . .
Cousins Sophie and Wil certainly have their hands full. Wil’s old friend Mr. Bertram is blamed for the disappearance of a priceless manuscript and lands in jail, things are up in the air at Auntie Vi’s Fortune-Telling with a new competitor next door, Sophie and Wil have exams to study for, Aunt Rue doesn’t get the new job at the Secretariat after all, and their neighbour, Mrs. Oleander, falls deathly ill. But that’s not the half of it. When they travel with their Aunt Violet on a prize trip to Iceland sponsored by Perfect Products (purveyors of her beloved crystal ball), Wil and Sophie face danger and magic – galdur. They are even – not to give away too much – captured by trolls and almost end up in the soup du jour! Meanwhile, the Serpent’s Chain, an ancient secret society, will stop at nothing to reclaim Wil’s magical black medallion. Despite the danger to their own lives, Sophie and Wil struggle valiantly to learn more about the Chain, whose web of deceit, they discover, extends all the way to Iceland. In short – WHAT A MESS! Bridgman’s compelling work is genre-arching in all the right ways. With remarkable prose and lyrical language, the story carries you afloat from the first chapter. Its artfully quiet beginning soars to an epic finish, preparing us for the next volume in the series....If you are looking for a twisty and well-written fantasy novel, then this may be the next read for you. (5-star review)
- Lily Andrews, Reader Views for Kids Bridgman is a master of atmospheric descriptions, symbolism, and foreshadowing, blending them into gorgeous prose....I love how the most serious and surprising moments are lightened with humor. I nearly fell over laughing in a scene where real trolls react to seeing troll dolls, which was absolutely hilarious. Overall, this is an engaging, engrossing, and wonderful installment of the series, and I have no doubt it will delight all who read it. Very highly recommended. (5 star-review) - Jamie Michele, Readers' Favorite The fourth installment in Rae St. Clair Bridgman's MiddleGate series, THE KINGDOM OF TROLLS, is a well-paced, exciting addition to the magic-filled world of Wil and Sophie that will delight long-time fans, and may well entice a great many new ones. (4.9/5 star-review) - Craig Jones, IndieReader Magic, fantasy, and adventure converge for another wild adventure in this spellbinding universe. - Kirkus Reviews Though Hogwarts is a long way from Winnipeg, MiddleGate may be within reach. Next time you find yourself in the Exchange, take a closer look at the Kelly House and you may end up someplace completely unexpected. - Toby Cygman, The Bulletin |
